The NCEA Level 1 Mathematics Common Assessment Task (MCAT) is to take place in September. It is for Mathematics and Statistics 1.2 (AS91027 - Apply algebraic procedures in solving problems).
It should be regarded as the most important assessment for Level 1 maths. The reason is that students who don't pass it will be severely restricted with regard to the their choices of subsequent maths courses. In many schools, students need to get, at least, merit in the MCAT in order to do the Level 2 achievement standards course the following year.
After Level 1, maths becomes much more algebraic. Even geometry is then algebraic.
Level 1 students need to be revising algebra now. Those who are having difficulty with it need to obtain help urgently.
